The windshields in today's vehicles serve more than just protection from the elements; they also provide a substantial portion of the structural integrity of the vehicle in case of a rollover accident, and if a vehicle's airbags deploy the windshield keeps them in place.
The technician will use a combination of power and hand tools to cut thru the moldings and urethane on your existing windshield. He will then clean the surface where the new urethane will lay. This will include priming the metal and grinding any surface rust. A new bead of urethane is applied and the new windshield is set in place. All wipers, attachments and cowl are replaced and finally the new windshield is washed.
This is a very simplified description of the process. The average time to replace a windshield is 1 hour, plus 1 hour for the urethane to set up to be safe enough to drive. During the winter months drive away times increase to 2 to 3 hours, depending on the temperature. Some foreign and classic cars take longer and we will inform you of the time needed to complete the job safely.
